Tern Survey Outing 燕鷗調查 — 大鵬灣及西貢東部水域 25/7/2004

White-bellied Sea Eagle: 6
Black-naped Tern: 249
Bridled Tern: 155
White-winged Tern: 1

On 25 July Sunday, sunny and hot, light breeze from the E. The sea is calm to moderate.

Two adult White-bellied Sea Eagles were seen at Sham Chung.

We had high number of Black-naped Terns at Hoi Ha.  Despite two holiday fishermen on the Hoi Ha light-house, about 60 BN Terns were found on the two yellow floating platforms. They offered the best chances for photographing. For those who are sharp-eyed, one non-breeding White-winged Tern could be seen.

Just before reaching Kung Chau lighthouse, we saw a Black Kite chased away by about 7-8 BN Terns.

In Kung Chau, the BN Terns were even more spectacular, but our boat did not allow a close appraoch. Also, the sea was more rough. Our rocking boat made good photography almost impossible.

Just before reaching Tern Island, we saw 10-20 Bridled Terns accompanying a 2nd year White-bellied Sea Eagle moving away from the island.

At Tern Island, the Bridled Terns were seemingly disturbed. About 80 Bridled Terns were circling high up the sky, sometimes as far as 500m away from the island. Although there were no significant people moving on the island, there were a Ferry with 30-40 people taking diving lessons. Also there was a man-made shelter just above the pier. It is not clear what exactly cause the Terns to react this way. We stayed for about 20 minutes, photographing the flying Terns from our boat. By this time, the Terns were moving closer and closer to the Island. BY the time we left, the flock had grown to 120 Terns and they are in a mode trying to land on the island.

After lunch at Tap Mun, we set for Sai Kung. Three adult White-bellied Sea Eagles were seen near Sai Kung Pier.
