Title: Long Valley and Bird Flu Üñì»P¸V¬y·P
Post by Owlet-nightjar on Jan 30th, 2004, 9:17pm
The action of the government to close Mai Po Nature Reserve for an indefinite period have touched the nerve of HK citizens.
This evening I met a couple of farmers in Long Valley, they are on the board of Ku Tung Vegetable Farmers Association.
After hearing of the closure of Mai Po Nature Reserve,  they are very concerned about the danger of Bird Flu at Long Valley.

Their worry is the farmers or visitors to Long Valley might get a chance to catch the bird flu.
As we all know that Long Valley is another place like urban parks where people and birds might meet.
The farmers have invited journalists to Long Valley, hoping to air their concern on the issue.
They are keen to talk to any other interested parties about the avian flu situation.

It seems that this our chance to keep up a dialogue with the worried farmers in Long Valley and maintain understanding of each others views.

If we go to Long Valley in the next few weeks, we may need to be sensitive about the bird flu issue.

I think the farmers should understand what the birds are doing in their field before 'clearing' the birds from their fields. The birds remove a great number of insects from their fields everyday.

The following photos were taken in one of the vegetable fields in Long Valley on 14.12.03.

The first photo was taken at 2:46pm and the second one was taken at 2:48pm for the same Olive-backed Pipit. It caught 2 bugs within 2 minutes and ate both.

If the birds are 'cleared' from the fields, the number of insects will suddenly increase.

Firstly insects can be carriers of infectious diseases and impose health hazards to human beings; secondly what will the enormous number of insects do to the crops of the farmers?

???
