Our suggestions to the Hong Kong Government on combating Avian Flu

1.¡@The vigorous monitoring programme on H5N1 should be continued.
2.¡@Since H5N1 can be transmitted through wild bird trade, the monitoring of H5N1 on wild bird trade should be stepped up. The practice of the whole wild bird trade should be reviewed.
3.¡@Release of wild birds for any purposes (including religious ceremony and release of sick traded wild bird) should be prohibited at this time.
4.¡@Feral Pigeons in urban parks should be included in the monitoring programme. There should be more frequent cleaning of bird droppings caused by Feral Pigeons in urban parks.
5.¡@There were captive Ducks and Flamingos kept in open area in Kowloon Park and other areas. We propose to separate these captive species to wild birds, in exactly the same way as that for poultry.
6.¡@Hong Kong should actively export its experiences in regulating poultry farm and monitoring programme.  These experiences should help other countries to design effective strategy to control the virus.
