Don't worry, a world without wildlife is uninhabitable, human will not be able to live long after the disappearence of wildlife. We should be wise enough not to destroy the nature I guess, even though thats what we have been doing for quite a while. But things are changing, although a bit slow, but it will like a snowball running down the slope, getting bigger and bigger .... and eventually achieving our goals... I hope...

Nobody in Hong Kong or anywhere else is killing wild birds en masse to contain the H5N1 virus. That's the opinion of only very few extremists. I have confidence most people around do love Nature and wildlife.

Are we Hongkongers being paranoid of bird flu? I'd say yes, from what I observe from media reports and locals' reactions. But then, we are humans. We have emotions. We are happy, sad, angry or afraid one time or another. It's perfectly normal to be scared of a virus that can be spread by air and kill healthy people in 2-3 days. Would you be more afraid still if you know a few of the birds around us have this virus, as recent evidences showed? Each individual man is an emotional creature. We cannot expect the public to think or act rationally, even in a world without bird flu.

Perhaps we humans have alienated ourselves from Mother Nature for too long, so we perceive Nature as something hostile. Indeed, diseases have always been part of life, and will continue affect us, humans and other animals alike. It's time for us to learn more about Nature, to understand it, to embrace it, to appreciate it, to live in it, for we are part of Nature ourselves.

My advice: Just sit back, relax, and enjoy birding. Nobody will die just because a few birds fly around us.

When the government is not sending the right message to the public, we birders can stand up and set the example --- go birding more often than usual -- and let people know there is nothing to worry about. :)

Yes, I would highlight to my friends that no one has caught the virus from birdwatching, while most of those who got it have had close contact with poultry.

We cannot deny the fact that some wild birds are already infected. But I believe the risk of getting AI through birdwatching should be lower than that of being hurt by a snake or wild boar in the countryside, and definitely lower than that of visiting a market selling live poultry or wild birds.
