Environmental event - Hong Kong Earth Champions - Sunday 7 December
http://www.earthchampions.org

More people who love our environment one one place in HK than ever before - are you interested to meet them?

The Hong Kong Earth Champions have many practical solutions to share with their community.

In 9 weeks of the “Call to Action” to the community of Hong Kong, we received 238 nominations from the community and on the
8 November we celebrated the Earth Champions with an awards event.

this Sunday it is their opportunity to showcase what they have been achieving.

Attached is a poster and below are the details of how to get to the Cyberport Roof Garden, the event begins at 11am until 3pm. There will be a “Speakers corner” where people can give a presentation to the public and show a presentation if they wish to.

There will be many marvellous  examples of the work that the Earth Champions have achieved in Hong Kong, both in business, government and every day life.
  • People can see how they can grow food in their own novel mini greenhouse which can be in their apartment or on their own balcony.....(One of our inventors has developed a very important way for people to grow pesticide free vegetables, every week without needing a garden)
  • A elderly Bird Watchers Society  that has integrated care for theenvironment and care for the aged with stimulating activities andmentoring - The HKBWS Crested Bulbul Club.
  • The CEO from a major Hong Kong company that has designed a novel methodology for engineering and architectural design (they call the approach “the 4th dimension”). This has saved hundreds of tonnes of CO2 in the building and functioning of a major complex just completed, and also saved millions of dollars. It has enhanced the ability to deliver the exact amount of materials on time, on specification. This system will revolutionise the way in which buildings are designed and built. The group have generously said they will offer this IP to other organisations because the benefits to CO2 savings and money is substantial. (It took $15 million to develop and saved $55 million in the first building using this technology).
  • The world famous Chinese explorer who has taught more than 450,000 children. She has explored and photographed the Antarctic, Alaska and climbed Everest. She is a highly revered explorer and has a dream of building the first Chinese Museum in Hong Kong to track and showcase the activity in the Antarctic and North Pole and the relationship to global climate change.
  • The courageous young fisherman who  paid $10,000 HK to save the life of a large whale shark because he is concerned about unsustainable fishing practices. He offered to buy the whale shark and then released it back into the wild. Since then he has been ridiculed and other fishermen have offered sharks to him to buy or they will slaughter them. His own family consider him an “enemy” because he is not a proper fisherman. This compellingly humble young man personifies some of the qualities we discover in Earth Champions.
  • The CEO of Hong Kong’s leading think-tank renowned for its clarity and effectiveness  on environmental policy and Climate Change as well as health and social issues.
  • The primary school that has developed a methodology of reducing its carbon footprint by 10% per year through the efforts of its children and also their families and other schools that have replicated the program.
  • An architectural company that has integrated climate change abatement and ecological principles into its designs for inspiring major building constructions both in Hong Kong and internationally.
  • A very novel wind energy  technology  developed by two young Americans living in Hong Kong based on vibration of aerofoils rather than rotation of vanes.
  • An airline company that  designed an aircraft hangar that provided major savings  in power, water and construction materials as well as making it a better working environment.
  • A shipping company that has developed a simple method of dramatically reducing the emissions of ships when in harbour locations which has a major beneficial impact on the quality of water and the marine environment.
  • A Bank that has developed and implemented a way of reducing their building’s carbon footprint by a highly efficient  space management  system. This results in savings on floor space, energy and time/funds. Space needs have been cut down by two thirds.
  • A guide for Going Green in Hong Kong which is used by many everyday people on how to live sustainably. Simple, fundamental and effective.
  • An energy innovation using wave power that is simple and cheap to build and install for small and  micro installations that would be ideal for coastal communities that wish to harness renewable energy sources.

We have chosen the Cyberport Podium (roof garden) as our venue because it will reach a cross-section of the community of Hong Kong. It is a natural setting for our event since it is a beautiful green space to which people and young families naturally gravitate during the weekends.  Encouraging people, communities and businesses to grow roof gardens is a key component of the global conservation movement as it one of the many simple and brilliant ways we can help clean up our air.

Please feel free to bring a picnic and invite your family and friends to come and meet the Hong Kong Earth Champions. 歡迎攜帶食物進行野餐活動,並請邀請閣下的家人及朋友一同參與,認識各位維護地球先鋒

There are cafes and restaurants in the area around the gardens, so you can just as easily buy some food and beverages there.
