Subject: 白變噪鵑 Leucistic Common Koel [Print This Page]

Author: irsychan    Time: 24/09/2016 16:00     Subject: 白變噪鵑 Leucistic Common Koel

All photographs were taken on 24 September 2016 at Mai Po.
Due to the close distance of the bird from bird hide, light reflection from the exposed surface of a lens without hood may scare away the bird. Suggest putting lens hood on.

Thank you, John, for your compliments.  It is attractive indeed.
I haven't seen it in my previous visits to Mai Po.  Would it be possible that this bird was born in Mai Po earlier this year?

Thank you for your compliments, jsk_ppp.  Your photographs of the same bird are stunning (as always)! Probably because it came closer to the bird hide on Sunday?
On 24 Sept Saturday morning, there were other birders in the same bird hide and while most were quiet, there were a few birders on upper floor of the bird hide who made quite a lot of noises.  Probably because of the noises (and lens glare), the birds including the 'normal' Common Koels and this Leucistic Common Koel stayed behind thick cover of leaves on the trees most of the time.

The fact that the iris is not red perhaps suggests that it is a first-year bird, although it's difficult to know whether this may also have been affected by the colour mutation. I'm not sure how else to age it based on the photos.
There is clearly passage of koels through Mai Po at the moment, with good numbers throughout the reserve. I don't think it's possible to say whether it was hatched at Mai Po or is a migrant from elsewhere.

By the way, the warbler labelled ??? in post #6 is an Arctic Warbler.

Dear John,
Thank you for your reply and thank you for your identification of the warbler.
