Sha Lo Tung is an interesting site at any time of year. It is an elevated to the east of Tai Po. This area consists of fung shui woods, sandy streams and wet grasslands. The place is known as an excellent site for bush warblers, robins and buntings. The site has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a rich diversity of plant and animal life occurs here. Other than birds the site is important for its plants and dragonflies.
A long-running controversy over plans to turn village land into a golf course resulted in the village being sold to developers. The area is now abandoned.
To get there by car, take the Ting Kok Road out of Tai Po towards Tai Mei Tuk. At the beginning of Tai Po Industrial Estate, a narrow road to the left leads to Fung Yuen. At the back of the village there is a narrow path which leads up to the access road to Sha Lo Tung. By public transport, take bus 75K bus from Tai Po Market KCR station, passes Fung Yuen. It is also possible to take a taxi from Tai Po but most taxi-drivers refuse to go there.
