Kite Research Group
The Kite Research Group (The Group) aims at studying and monitoring the local population and breeding condition of Black Kites by conducting regular night roost counts and annual breeding survey.
The Group has been conducting night roost counts of Black Kites since 2000s. Group members conduct monthly counts at three major night roost sites in Hong Kong. Black Kites from the north migrate to Hong Kong in winter. Therefore, large-scaled roost count is important and it is conducted in every December. By that time, the surveyed area is extended to other regions of Hong Kong such as Sai Kung and Stanley. The number of Black Kites increases from dozens in summer to over one thousand in winter.
