Bird ringing began in Hong Kong in 1965. Ringing is a hugely important tool in bird research. Using rings with codes that are globally unique, we can learn about bird migration patterns through re-sightings and recaptures. By collecting biometrics such as the age and sex of individuals, we can gain a host of information about a species; from population ecology and habitat use to estimating mortality and survival rates.
Here at The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society, we have been ringing birds since 2014. We focus primarily on 3 habitat types: wetlands, paddy fields and forests. And now, for the first time ever, we will be regularly reporting our activities in an online blog!
Not only will this blog include some up-close photos and information on rare and elusive species, but also information on exactly how, and why, we ring, age and sex our birds.
