The conservation of WBSE firstly caught public’s awareness in late 90’s when a theme park was proposed in Northeast Lantau near an area with a well-established WBSE nesting site.
Since then, more attention was drawn on the issue and more conservation effort was put on the species, including the commencement of regular WBSE breeding site surveys in 2002. With the continuous effort, the status of the WBSE in Hong Kong is now more known. In 2012, from the survey of WBSE Research Group, a total of 14 breeding pairs were recorded, with tow more potential breeding sites were identified. Despite of the encouraging result in recent years, the future of WBSE in Hong Kong is still far from promising.
