IDENTIFICATION

48-58 cm. Large dabbling duck with distinctive orange-buff supercilium, face and upper neck contrasting with blackish crown and eye stripe. Upperparts dull brown with pale brown fringes to feathers; underparts paler. Bill grey with black centre of upper mandible and nail.

Underwing coverts white; speculum dark green or blue depending on angle, pale tips to dark secondaries.
VOCALISATIONS
Calls are typical of larger Anatidae.
DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT PREFERENCE
The sole Hong Kong record occurred in a brackish gei wai at Mai Po NR.
OCCURRENCE
An adult was at Mai Po NR from 7 March to 16 May 2010 (Chow 2012).
BEHAVIOUR, FORAGING & DIET
No observations.
RANGE & SYSTEMATICS
Monotypic. Endemic to the Philippines occupying all major islands and some smaller islands. In China has only been recorded in Taiwan and HK (Liu and Chen 2020).
CONSERVATION STATUS
IUCN: VULNERABLE. Population trend decreasing due to over-hunting and loss of wetland habitat.
