The International Black-faced Spoonbill Census 2022 recorded 6,162 Black-faced Spoonbill individuals, i.e. a rise of 18% from the previous year. The results shed light to the potential for this globally Endangered species to be removed from the IUCN’s Red List in the years to come. Despite this hope being premature, after two decades of persistence and hard work of conservation across the region, birders and conservationists around the world would not let go of this thin ray of light.

Unrelenting efforts will continue saving Black-faced Spoonbills and the same spirit is applied to other species. Yellow-breasted Bunting was selected for the cover of the recently published HKBWS Field Guide to the Birds of Hong Kong and South China. The editorial team aims to raise awareness for this Critically Endangered species.
