Water is the source of all life, and for Shui Hau, nestled “Between Mountain and Sea” on Lantau Island, it flows like the lifeblood of this land.
#ShuiHauVillage on Lantau Island is nestled between mountains and the sea. The river water flows from the north through Lantau Peak, travelling through Fung Shui Wood, villages, streams, farmland, marshes, and intertrial zones, eventually flowing into to the bay through “Shui Hau” (which means” the estuary”), forming a unique #FreshwaterWetland, that’s home to a wide variety of wildlife and birds. This enchanting village, with its special rural characters and diverse habitats, creates a one-of-a-kind cultural landscape.
#Recultivation in Shui Hau, both success and challenges are intertwined with water. The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society has been working with Shui Hau Village on the “#BetweenMountainAndSea — Nature Conservation Management in Shui Hau”. Over three years, we have overcome numerous obstacles, diligently managing the habitats and safeguarding the “Shui” (which means “water”). These efforts have been rewarded with the revival of agricultural wetlands that vanished for over half of a century. This rebirth has allowed wetland-dependent species to nest here, birds to forage in the paddy fields, and the villagers to relive nostalgic memories of their rural life. Together, we enjoy the gifts bestowed by nature.
