Background on San Tin Technopole Development Controversy
The government suddenly announced in May last year an increase in the scale of the San Tin Technopole development, expanding the development area by 60%, reclaiming wetlands with an area of almost the size of Ma Wan Island. The plan would encroach into 175 hectares of internationally recognized Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, which is not in line with the national and global wetland conservation policies and targets.
The government has officially applied for the amendment of the San Tin outline zoning plan. Once approved, the wetland conservation zonings with legal protection within the 250 hectares of "Wetland Conservation Area" and "Wetland Buffer Area" will be entirely rezoned to Innovation and Technology zonings that are lacking of any wetland conservation intention. Such changes will lead to irreversible destruction to the entire wetlands including Mai Po and Shenzhen.
