「Hoo、Hoo、Hoo」

[Exploring the Mysterious Life of the Eurasian Eagle-Owl through Calls]

“Hoo, Hoo, Hoo” on a quiet night atop the mountain, a mysterious low and echoing call can be heard

Who could be making that sound? It's actually the Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo), the largest owl species in Hong Kong, reaching a length of 60 centimeters and a wingspan of up to 2 meters 🪽 and possesses a pair of orange eyes.

Lantau Island, being characterized by varying elevations and diverse habitats with scattered trees and rugged slopes, provides an ideal environment for the Eagle-Owl to roost and breed.

Despite its large size, it only ventures out at night to hunt, keeping its whereabouts secretive and making it challenging to locate them.

We employ passive acoustic monitoring techniques, akin to raising ears in different locations at night, to listen for the calls of the Eagle-Owl, increasing our chances of recording their presence. In the preparatory stages of our research, we've already captured the alarm calls and songs of the Eagle-Owl in various locations!

The question remains: do the calls of the Eagle-Owl conceal any meaningful information? When and where do they prefer to call? These are aspects we will explore and study in the coming year.
