Rosy Pipit Anthus roseatus 粉紅胸鷚

IDENTIFICATION
Oct. 2012, Martin Hale. First-winter.
15-16.5 cm. Small pipit with rather pale legs, dark bill, heavily streaked upperparts, broad tips to wing coverts forming obvious wing bars, pale area inside darker ear coverts and long, broad, bold supercilium that angles downward at the rear. In non-breeding plumage has buffish or whitish underparts with bold dark streaking on chest, belly and flanks and small pale base to lower mandible.

In breeding plumage has a pale rosy wash from throat to belly and limited, greyish streaking on the lower flanks.
VOCALISATIONS
The typical flight call is a high-pitched ‘tsip’, similar to Water Pipit but less shrill.
DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT PREFERENCE
Most records have occurred in the wet and dry agricultural area at Long Valley, with one at the migrant watchpoint of Po Toi.
OCCURRENCE
2006: one at Long Valley during 14-17 May (Talbot 2010).
2011: one on Po Toi on 10 May.
2012: one (probably two) at Long Valley from 28 October to 6 November.
2017: one at Long Valley on 26 November.
2020: one at Long Valley on 5th and 10 November.
BEHAVIOUR, FORAGING & DIET
No observations.
RANGE & SYSTEMATICS
Monotypic. Breeds in mountainous areas from northeast Afghanistan east through western Xinjiang and northwest India through the Himalayas and across the Tibetan plateau through southwest, west and central China to Hebei and Shandong; also, an isolated breeding population on Wuyi Shan, Jiangxi/Fujian. Present all year in southern or lower altitude areas of this range, and a winter visitor south as far as the Himalayan foothills, northeast India, north Myanmar and adjacent areas (Tyler and de Juana, 2020, Liu and Chen 2020).
