One of the projects funded under the Asia Conservation Fund 2021 - 2022, “An integrated conservation approach for the globally endangered Giant Nuthatch at Mt. Ashae Myim Anauk Myim area, Southern Shan State, Myanmar”, has been completed in January this year. Giant Nuthatch is an “Endangered” species on the IUCN Red List and is distributed in lower montane forests of south-western China, eastern Myanmar and northern Thailand. Mount Ashae Myin Anauk Myin (AMAM) is currently the only confirmed site of Giant Nuthatch in Myanmar. Unfortunately, it appears to be seriously threatened by agricultural expansion and firewood collection. With the support of HKBWS ACF, Nature Conservation Society (NCS) - Myanmar organised a series of education campaigns and established Local Conservation Groups (LCGs) to enhance the local community’s awareness of Giant Nuthatch conservation around the AMAM area.
NCS conducted four education campaigns on biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of resources, community-based tourism and conservation of Giant Nuthatch in AMAM. A total of 54 participants from four villages attended the Giant Nuthatch conservation talks. 27 of them established four LCGs afterwards and participated in Giant Nuthatch bird watching trips. They learned about bird conservation, birding skills and etiquette, as well as how to use binoculars and bird guides. Bird watching and conservation promotional activities were subsequently organised by the LCGs, which gave tremendous impetus to local Giant Nuthatch conservation work. Besides, NCS - Myanmar took part in regular meetings with local authorities and stakeholders to discuss the possibility of designating the AMAM area as a protected area or community-based conservation area, in the hope of protecting Giant Nuthatch's main habitat.
HKBWS is grateful for NCS - Myanmar's efforts to conserve Giant Nuthatch and its natural habitats. We look forward to collaborating further with NCS - Myanmar to study the population and breeding ecology of Giant Nuthatch in Myanmar.
