Pak Thale
The first project funded by Asia Conservation fund 2023-2024 - 'Youth Camp for Conservation of Migratory Shorebirds and Salt Pan Habitat' organized by the Bird Conservation Society of Thailand (BCST), was completed successfully in early 2024.
The Pak Thale Nature Reserve, located in the Phetchaburi Province in the inner Gulf of Thailand, is a critical habitat for migratory shorebirds along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF). The Salt Pan in Pak Thale supports a diverse range of shorebirds. It serves as a feeding ground for more than 10,000 migratory shorebirds annually, including globally threatened species such as the Spoon-billed Sandpiper (Critically Endangered) and Nordmann's Greenshank (Endangered).
In order to enhance the connection between local students and natural conservation in Thailand, a total of 37 students have participated in the three-day Youth Camp held by BCST in the Pak Thale National Reserve. Through joining various activities such as bird identification lessons, bird-watching sessions, Salt Pan ecosystem-related interactive games and local engagement, students can thus understand more about migratory birds’ conservation, salt pan habitat and environmental protection. We hope these enriching experiences could positively impact and encourage the next generation to get involved in nature protection.
HKBWS keeps promoting environmental education in Hong Kong, and we are grateful to have this chance to fund such an impactful and meaningful education programme outside Hong Kong.
