Monitoring populations of Black-faced Spoonbill and migratory waterbirds wintering in Xuan Thuy National Park, Vietnam 2023/24
In year 2023-24, HKBWS ACF continues to fund the Xuan Thuy National Park for waterbird monitoring. The project ‘Monitoring populations of Black-faced Spoonbill and migratory waterbirds wintering in Xuan Thuy National Park, Vietnam’ aims to collect the bird count data of Black-faced Spoonbill and other waterbirds, especially endangered species. Thus, a long-term monitoring database can be built, which could provide a solid ground for conservation measures in Vietnam.
The monitoring programme was carried out from October 2023 to March 2024, consisting of 23 field days of survey, including the International Black-faced Spoonbill Census 2024. This year, a total of 53 waterbirds species have been recorded, with 39 migratory birds’ species, including 18 species that are globally threatened or near-threatened. Notable records include the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper, endangered Black-faced Spoonbill, endangered Nordmann's Greenshank, endangered Great Knot, as well as 7 near-threatened species: Falcated Duck, Black-tailed Godwit, Bar-tailed Godwit, Eurasian Curlew, Asian Dowitcher, Red Knot and Red-necked Stint.
Nevertheless, maximum daily counts of migratory birds with more than 2,000 individuals were in Con Xanh, one of the two offshore islands within Xuan Thuy National Park in winter 2023-2024. The census of Black-faced Spoonbill 2024 on 19-21 January 2024 recorded 81 BFS individuals, the highest number recorded during the season was 101 birds on December 27, 2023, the largest ever in Xuan Thuy National Park.
HKBWS is honoured to support the monitoring work in Xuan Thuy National Park consecutively, and we hope that the data collected will reflect the park's importance to migratory waterbirds in the flyway.
